Birmingham City CouncilBirmingham City Council's public health department through the student internship and public health graduate programme has developed new routes into a core specialist function of local government. The student programme, developed with six partner universities, is providing supported project-based placements for students from a diverse range of disciplines and levels. The graduate programme is an opportunity to move from 'know how' to 'show how' in a paid fixed term 12 month role. To date all graduates have been successful in finding employment. Taking a competency-based project approach these programmes are creating a pipeline for the next generation of public health.
