**A WELCOME LETTER FROM EDITOR OF LGC, NICK GOLDING, TO ALL DELEGATES**

As the world awaits November’s COP26 conference in Glasgow it is understandable to feel daunted by the scale of the challenge we all face. But while climate change clearly is a global problem, our fate does not depend only on the actions of world leaders. Indeed, it is only through concerted actions by individuals, local areas and regions, as well as by countries, that we can best fight climate change.

So LGC’s Climate Change event is taking place at a crucial time. We welcome to you to this virtual event which is intended to give you inspiration and support as you work out how to ensure your council’s net zero pledge is backed by a coherent plan and actions to bring about change. Together we can make an impact.

While local government has of course been preoccupied with the scale of the response to the pandemic over the past year, Covid does of course demonstrate that it is possible to totally change course. The notion of turning off, or at least partially turning off, the world’s economy was inconceivable, as was vast swathes of our national workforce working from home, prior to the past year. Technological and societal change raise many dilemmas about our future but they to offer hope of progress towards net zero.

This event offers you practical case studies and the viewpoints of leading experts in the field as you contemplate how to make change. We very much hope you enjoy it and wish you success as you chart a passage towards net zero.

Best wishes,

Nick Golding
